#47: Scones
Whether you read and pronounced this as scones-as-in-phones or scones-as-in-lawns, you have stumbled upon one of the easiest breakfast treats you can whip up while still creating something with your own two hands AND engaging in actual baking (also for the record, this is a scones-as-in-phones kind of scene, but you scones-as-in-lawns interlopers are still welcome).
Not being a big fan of scones myself, I have included both a classic recipe for cream scones as well as a more liberal interpretation that transplants the flakiness of a biscuit into the body of a scone. Both make wonderful vessels for liberal amounts of butter, jam, or clotted cream and also serve to disguise any weird smells that might be emanating from some now dubious Christmas leftovers. How lovely would it be to cap off this last month of gluttony with a final act of hedonism in the form of warm-from-the-oven homemade scones? Be ambitious and earmark one of these recipes for your New Year’s Day breakfast or be realistic and make them on the 31st as a bready lining for your soon-to-be punished stomach and liver. Both options will surely be met with approval by anyone within a 100-feet radius of your oven.
